Abstract:

Objective To explore the activity of Pterostilbene (PTE) in inducing apoptosis of Candida albicans. Methods We used apoptosis, necrosis and overall viability assays, caspase activity determination, ROS measurement and mitochondrial membrane potential assay to evaluate the activity of PTE in inducing apoptosis of C.albicans.Results After C.albicans treated with ≥4 μg/ml PTE, the percentage of apoptosis cells and activity of Caspase notably increased. Moreover, the mitochondrial membrane potential decreased significantly and the intracellular ROS increased. Conclusions PTE has an apoptosis-inducing effect on C.albicans, and this effect may be associated with ROS accumulation and mitochondrial injure.
